New Camera

My new camera came. Impressive of course. Haven’t shot with it. Control wise, it is even more customizable than my D200 but still I cannot get the perfect combination of dial directions for all controls like aperture controls, shutter-speed, and exposure comp. Nor can I get the function button set to give 1/3 stop adjustments when pressed so I can set the default to 1 stop increments. The opposite is possible. The lack of a protective screen is a bit disturbing since I will be tossing it on my regular day to day shoulder bag. I will seek one when one is available.

I haven’t installed CaptureNX yet. I will and it will change my workflow by quite a bit. Not looking forward to that. My preferred noise reduction solution has not been updated to provide noise profiles but I don’t have an immediate need for it now.

I am still seeking to fill out my kit with a 300mm and a 28mm. I might also get one of the 2.8 zooms: the ultrawide or the midrange. I doubt I will get the recently announced 24 PC but it is interesting. I also am seriously considering a new bag since I can’t carry it about very easily now.

Bad Osaka Trip

I took a Juhachi trip over to Osaka. Did some shopping. Found most of the items I wanted for building a desktop computer. Even at prices I could deal with. Then I found a Nikkor 200mm f/4 Ai for 6800 yen and paid 6500 yen for it. Good price for a lens is fantastic condition. I’m quite please. I also found a really cheap CD-rom for the busted Dell notebook. I also took too long to find me the HD I was looking for. I got the deals I was looking for and scouted all I wanted for next week’s visit. I also know now that I no longer need to bring a map.

Then I took the wrong train on the loop line and that delayed me. Then I might not have taken the Special Rapid and just took the Rapid. That might have further delayed me. Though I am not sure if in the end it mattered.

So here I am stuck in Kamigori from about 11pm til 6am the next morning when the next train started. Kamigori doesn’t have shit. It has a koban and that is it. There is no combini or restaurant. I ate breakfast before I left for Osaka and didn’t get to eat until I got back home at 7am the next morning. Fucking coldest (or amongst the coldest) night of the winter too. There was frost which is unusual.

I’ve decided not to not build the desktop. And right now I’m fixing the Dell notebook and I will get some other stuff (wireless mouse, usb pcmcia card, webcam) to make my network function the way I want it. Still, I am not sure if the system can play the h264 files that are the rage now.

I wasn’t able to find a 28mm f/2 or 2.8 close focus lens for a good price this round.

Bad Tokyo trip

I took the local trains to Tokyo with Juhachi Kippu. Took 12 hours and I started just after 6am. Not as bad as I expected at all. Actually, it was a pretty nice trip. On the other hand, the body of the trip itself wasn’t very good. It was quite bad. One night in a capsule hotel. I wasn’t miserable but getting my shit in a locker was rough. Never want to do that again.

There was of course no planning and no further places to stay booked. So one more night in a manga cafe and New Year’s in some damned foreigner bar then hauling a drunk guy around. Then catching the morning train home. Now that ride was rough. Really fucking rough. Not so much the ride itself but my condition and lack of bathing.

Glad to be home. Travel alone might be best for me.

D3 on order

My D3 is on order with a Tokyo vendor. I’m also saving up for the 300 2.8. I hope to get the D3 within 2 months. I’m queued 100+ people deep.

No decision on the desktop but having priced out something at about $1500, it doesn’t look likely. On the other hand, used gear seems available… but at shit prices. Best bet is still to fix up the old Dell.

Going to Tokyo in a few days for New Year’s holiday. Will look at some camera shits and computer shits while I’m there.

I will also look for my Tegan and Sara album. Fucking Tower had only one copy left at nearly 40 dollars. FUCK YOU TOWER! The CD was 10 bucks at Amazon on release. It is still only 12. And I can even score the one day shipping thing too. I’ll look hard for it in Tokyo but if I don’t find it, maybe I’ll have my family hook me up. This shit is jacked up.

It is Christmas but one would never know it. I had Christmas Cake but this was one shitty Christmas.

Decisions about a desktop

Decisions. Decisions. I now regret my decision to get the ‘free’ point and shoot instead of the 19″ LCD monitor. The monitor seems like it would be a lot more useful now. If I had that, I would more easily consider getting a desktop here in Japan. The other relevant items to consider are of course price and my renewal. Since Juhachi Kippu season is almost here again, I need to decide since I like Osaka for gear shopping.

Another option, one that is less expensive, is to replace the HDD on the Dell laptop. But since the damn thing doesn’t boot off USB and doesn’t have a working CD drive… I need to see if I can find a solution to installing an OS.

Or maybe I will just continue life without a second computer. I don’t like it but I can survive.

I also need to figure out my plans for the D3 and the 300mm I want and thus I need to deal with what I want to do in terms of a support system. I need a monopod for the 300. I need to figure out what I can get with my D3 points. The support system I get should fit into my overall plans for a support system (tripod, ball head, Arca-swiss plates).

I don’t like having to make this decision now.

Mobile phones in Japan

I was reading Slashdot and came across a link to this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/sep/27/guardianweeklytechnologysection.mobilephones

As someone living in Japan and using a Japanese cell phone, reading this article really pissed me the fuck off. The writer either has little use for mobile technology outside of the precanned bullshit they put on these phones or is so into the hype he can’t tell what features are useful.

The ‘tattoos’ mentioned are little bar codes read by the camera on the phones. They do nothing but turn into a URL. It is a fucking advertisement. So damned cool.

The ‘killer app’ here is one I find fucking terrible. I don’t want to use some wanker email address assigned to my phone. I want to use MY email. I want to use a SSH client to read MY email. If I unfortunate enough to prefer Exchange, I’d want to use THAT. Blackberry got that so damned right.

And since when have the phones been nice here? I find them larger than I prefer and plastic fantastic. (That is not a complement.) Sure some have nice features like VGA screens and others have 3G High Speed (but in limited areas). But what good is that if you can’t connect the fucker to a computer and access the Internet. What the fuck are you going to download at fantastic speeds on your phone?

I haven’t owned a Blackberry (or hell even a phone before this so I can’t comment on how shitty the user interface is on other handsets) but I have supported them for work. So I do have experience with them. They work a hell of a lot better than most Japanese phones (and I haven’t tried every one but only a few of them even have a chance at being usable). The jog wheel is huge here. And for the Blackberries that aren’t shitty (read: have qwerty keyboards), they are vastly superior.

And anyone mentioning Japanese TV in a positive context obviously hasn’t seen Japanese TV. It is shit. It is a value added feature and all and they even have a whole broadcast technology for it (One Seg) and it is even free (TV in Japan is taxed, mobile TV isn’t). However, it adds a LOT of bulk and expense to the phone. No one seems to dig small slim phones. Cultural difference I suspect.

I also like how the article seems to think a country of people buried in their cell phones is a good thing. It sure beats people interacting with each other. That is something that doesn’t happen in Japan. Strangers do not start conversations with each other. They don’t make small talk. They prefer digging into their cell phones.

This isn’t the first article with this kind of content on this subject I have read. I didn’t even give it second thought before I became a phone carrying member of the Japanese populace. But now that I am, I know it was written by someone who is not familiar enough with his topic… or has such contempt for his audience, he would spoon feed them drivel.

Nikon D3

I have decided I want to purchase this. I have already begun saving up for it. It should be months before I have the money saved. But I am now on mad crazy unemployment style saving mode. I expect to have the cash in March. Wow that sounds so far away.

I found a 300mm F4 in Osaka, 2 actually, that I wanted but I don’t know if I want to pull the trigger or continue saving. The price was good and with the new camera I will need even longer lenses.

I have still yet to find a good vendor for the camera in Okayama, one with 10% points. I did find a reasonable vendor but those 10% in points is not chump change. Taking trips to Osaka if need be will occur. I did hear a rumor that a Bic Camera will open in the autumn near the Eki. No evidence so far but if it is true, then many of my issues will be solved regarding a vendor.

I need a HB-1 for my 35-70 too.

Osaka

I finally had a real trip to Osaka this weekend. I Ju Hachi Kippued out there early Saturday and wandered about. I found a 1000 yen haircut place but would not work up the motivation to find it again when I was ready for getting my head cut. Oh well. Next week.

I did accomplish my goals in Osaka: to find a cheap S-Video cable (400 yen), a cheap switch (5 port, baseTX, 1200 yen, could have gotten one for 1000 yen but decided against it for no good reason), cheap network cable (200 yen).

I was not able to complete a few other things. I did not get to eat takoyaki. I passed up chance at cheap takoyaki because I didn’t want to break a big bill. Next week. I was able to find one small camera shop but was not able to really find a large variety. Oh well. This effectively dashes my plan of a cheapish used long lens from Japan. It just isn’t worth the effort to look. Instead, the D3 beckons to me.

With the cheap switch, the S-Video cable and the network cable, I now have a mostly working network of 2 laptops, an external IEEE 1394/USB HD, a tv for video out and 2 unused wireless routers. The irony of coming so prepared. I could have bought a USB headset here cheap too.

Osaka is moving up to my favorite Japanese city. Not only do I like Den Den Town (electronics shopping district) but they have street parking. Unfuckingheard of in Japan.

New things to buy

So Nikon announced some long awaited new toys a few days ago. A new D3 with a full framed sensor. I’m glad they did and I’m also thinking it is too soon. Especially since the D3 might cost about $5000 and I am going to have a hard time putting that together. But it is indeed the Holy Grail. I wonder what the viewfinder will be like.

There was also a D300 announced. This is a upgraded D200 with a DX sized sensor. Nice but this would be ideal with a larger sensor. Maybe in a year. There was a very nice upgrade the the AF which was much needed (15 cross type sensors). It is the same AF system used in the D3. The AF is now no longer inferior to Pentax. Other things like the shooting speed and buffer were upgraded but I am more curious about the new battery grip. Will it still suck ass? The LCD also receives a massive upgrade to nearly 1 mega-pixel.

The long awaited announcement of VR upgraded long lenses also occurred. But who cares.

More interesting was the announcement of 2 new 2.8 zooms. The new 24-70 2.8 is a replacement for the 28-70 2.8 and is suppose to be slimmer but thank god it still takes 77mm filters. Very nice. There will also be a 14-24 2.8 (!!!!!). Not DX. Damn. But I’ve found I don’t like wide much so it isn’t for me.

I’m also still looking for a longer lens. Something like a 300mm f4. I would prefer something used. But used lenses in that range are quite hard to come by here. Not being able to read the local language makes it so much worse.

How I will get the cash for these toys is a mystery.
